Programme Aims


The aim of the programme is to train first degree holders in Nursing, who will demonstrate spiritual maturity, moral integrity, academic excellence, and professional competence in the health sector. The Nursing Programme of Christian Service University also aims at affecting the individual personality positively, preparing him/her adequately to qualify for certification and registration with the Nursing and Midwives Council of Ghana and empowering him/her to and within ethical and legal framework contribute to the body of knowledge of nursing through life-long learning for professional excellence and research.

Programme Objectives


The objectives of the programme are to:

  1. Understand the National Health Policies and their relevance to nursing.
  2. Apply knowledge of principles of homeostasis to meet clients/patients need for maintenance of health.
  3. Use the nursing process (problem solving technique) to meet health needs of patients/clients, families and communities.
  4. Demonstrate ability to function professionally as an effective member of the health team.
  5. Exhibit cultural sensitivity in using concepts and approaches in effective communication to relate to all manner of people.
  6. Demonstrate ability to perform a community diagnosis, and also plan, implement and evaluate community programmes for preventive, promotive and rehabilitative services.
  7. Plan and carry out health education in relation to identified health needs of the people.
  8. Promote primary health care services in the community and identify and refer clients/patients where necessary.
  9. Demonstrate ability to think critically in applying nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments.
  10. Develop skills in managing and administering health care units within the confines of national health policies.
  11. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for professional actions.
  12. Contribute to building nursing knowledge through research and use research findings in providing health care.

Duration


SSCE and WASSCE holders: The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is a four year course providing an initial introduction to the basic principles of nursing.

Diploma Applicants who are holders of the Registered General Nursing (RGN) Diploma from recognised institutions plus the licensure examination of the Nursing and Midwifery Council who have at least 1 – 3 years’ working experience and a pass at Diploma level may be admitted to Third Year (Level 300) of the degree programme after a successful interview. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is a two year top-up course.

Mature applicants: Mature applicants who are nurses with SRN, RMN, RM, PHN or relevant nursing certificates with one year or more of practice and good recommendation and have attained the age of 25 years are admitted to Level 200 of the programme. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is a three year course.

Entry Requirements


  1. SSSCE Holders: Applicants should have passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising THREE core Subjects (Mathematics, Integrated Science and English Language), plus credits in THREE (3) electives. The elective subjects should be selected from (a) Science; (Chemistry & Biology are compulsory, Physics and elective Mathematics are alternatives), (b) Home Economics, (c) General Arts and (d) Agricultural Science options. The overall aggregate must be 24 or better.
  2. WASSCE Holders: Applicants should have credit passes (A1- C6) in six (6) subjects comprising THREE core Subjects (Mathematics, Integrated Science and English Language), plus credits in THREE (3) electives. The elective subjects should be selected from (a) Science; (Chemistry & Biology are compulsory, Physics and elective Mathematics are alternatives), (b) Home Economics, (c) General Arts and (d) Agricultural Science options. The overall aggregate must not exceed 36 for level 100 placement.
  3. Diploma Applicants: Holders of the Registered General Nursing (RGN) Diploma from recognised institutions plus the licensure examination of the Nursing and Midwifery Council who have at least 1 – 3 years’ working experience and a pass at Diploma level may be admitted to Second Year (Level 200) of the degree programme after a successful interview. The interview panel will comprise representatives from Christian Service University.
  4. Mature applicants: Mature applicants must be nurses with SRN, RMN, RM, PHN or relevant nursing certificates. Nurses with one year or more of practice and good recommendation and have attained the age of 25 years or above possessing Five (5) GCE Credits at O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics or Credits in Core English Language and Mathematics and Integrated Science and Three (3) Elective subjects with an aggregate of 24 or better at SSSCE/WASSCE; and passing a qualifying examination conducted by the University.
