A Level 400 Communication and Public Relations student of Christian Service University (CSU), Doreen Tandoh, known on air as Maame Adwoa Nyanta Tandoh, has been named Newscaster of the Year for the Ashanti Region at the 15th edition of the CityHills Foklex Media Awards.
The awards ceremony was held at the GNAT Hall in Accra, bringing together media practitioners from across the country to celebrate excellence in broadcasting. She emerged top in the category for the Ashanti Region, beating nominees from six other radio stations.
Ms. Tandoh currently works as a newscaster and programme host at OTEC 102.9 FM in Kumasi, a role she combines with her studies at CSU. Her broadcasting career, which spans a decade, has taken her from Apollo FM and NFM in the Western Region to Sunsum FM and, currently, Otec FM in Kumasi.
Reflecting on her CSU journey, Ms. Tandoh said her time at the University has strengthened the academic and professional foundations of her broadcasting career, helping her understand communication beyond the studio.
Balancing a demanding on-air schedule with academic work has not been easy, but Ms. Tandoh credits careful time management and the flexibility of her employer for making it possible. She currently attends lectures on weekends, with the support of OTEC FM’s management.
Ms. Tandoh traces her passion for broadcasting to her childhood fascination with television, nurtured over the years by her father, Mr. Bernard Kojo Tandoh, and shaped early in her career by her first news editor. She continues to draw inspiration from established female voices in Ghana’s media industry, including Akosua Ago Aboagye, and Nana Yaa Brefo.
On what the award means to her, Ms. Tandoh described it as confirmation that hard work and consistency pay off over time. She encouraged aspiring communicators and journalism students to stay patient and invest in building their skills and reputation early in their careers, noting that the rewards of the profession come gradually, with time and dedication.
