AUTHENTIC CHRISTIANITY:A PANACEA FOR SOCIETY’S ILLS

The Chairman of the Ghana Peace Council and Immediate-Past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church-Ghana,Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante has disclosed that religion that is true to its nature must be concerned about man’s social condition. He said this during a lecture he delivered on the theme“My Ministerialand Theological Formation”organised by the Theology Department of the Christian Service UniversityCollege (CSUC) in Kumasi.

“Any religion that professes to be concerned with the souls of men and not concerned with the slumps that dump them, the economic conditions that strangle themand the social conditions that cripple them is as dry as dust religion”Prof. Asante asserted.

As an advocate for social gospel, Prof. Emmanuel Asante added that it is important to bring spirituality of the Gospel to bear with the concrete reality of the socio-political activities that affectpeople’s lives whether they are Christians or not.

“Do not sit down and shut your mouth and say that you are praying for the leadership of this country (Ghana) only but be concerned as well about the things they do that affect your social lives,” said Prof. Emmanuel Asante.

He encouraged the students and staff of Theology Department at Christian Service University College – Kumasi(CSUC) to be concerned about security, health, education, unemployment andother social problemsin the society. Inaddition to praying to God to solve these social problems, Christians should speak about them through their teachings of the gospel to effect the changes they want.

He commended the Theology Department and the management of CSUC for organising the lecture. He encouraged lecturers of the Department to continue to shapen the perspective of theology students in a holistic, pragmatic and spiritual way.
